I haven’t been blogging for quite some time and I must apologize for that. I have been sooo busy with our programs reaching the Marshas and Joeys out there. I know that’s not an excuse but it’s not meant to be one. I just wanted to explain what’s been up with my blogging. I promised to do better with blogging and with that said.
I have had the subject of SUBSTANCE on my heart. Where is it? What is it? According to Webster- essential nature : essence. practical importance : meaning, usefulness.
We see a lot of activities in our day to day lives that consist of how we help ourselves move through our personal agenda. Where is the substance in this? As individuals the least we can do is help ourselves. Is this substance? I believe that substance is something that is tangible, real and lasting. This can only come from experiences we complete outside of ourselves for someone else. Some have called it paying it forward. What a great phrase. We have a society filled with quick catch phrases. But we need really good ones that motivate us to do good and positive actions.
With every action is a reaction. So if we do good actions we should see good reactions. I have a special promise to God about seeing people on the street who are homeless or asking for help. You know the ones that stand on street corners or at stop lights with cardboard signs. The signs read something like HOMELESS, HUNGRY PLEASE HELP AND GOD BLESS or a variation of these very desperate words. I notice whenever I give others around me follow. It’s as if they just needed someone to start or act first before they would. Somehow they did not want to appear to see the invisible people our society has judged that carries signs desperate signs in our streets.
The deliberate conversations that I have begun with others regarding these people, our fellow human beings, our neighbors result in 2 very distinct responses. First, they are just out to get the money for drugs or alcohol. Second, I always give something. Which one are you? If you do something anything are you engaging in an action of substance? I am in the second group. I will always give money. I never judge them or question in my mind what they will use the money for. I have decided that if they are on the streets with handwritten signs they need help PERIOD. I’m more concerned with what I do and that I do something and the fact that I do it from my heart. My good samaritan heart. The heart my Father and saviour Jesus gave me. One of the most famous parables Jesus taught us was the story of the good samaritan. If you are not aware of this parable or story I have written it here for you.
Luke 10:29-37
29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[a] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
So I implore you to be people of substance. Living outside of yourself beyond what you do for just you. It makes a huge difference not just to you but to everyone that you see and don’t because when you help someone you are helping others. We are all connected. We all need each other whether it is a kind word or kind action. So let’s strive to be a person of substance. Not because of our personal accomplishments but because of whose life we help today and everyday.
