For me, LinkedIn is a special\nplatform filled with myriad talent demonstrated by accomplishments both\nprofessional and personal that are regularly posted. It is its own\nmotivational and living body of work made up of this thing we call the\ncollective human experience. From time to time, I am moved to add my voice\nin a meaningful way with a message that transcends\u2026This is one of those\ntimes. The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the world up profoundly causing us\nto take stock of LIFE. I specifically want to spark two points of deep\nthought and discussion it has revealed \u2013 stereotyping and vaccine hesitancy and\nits relationship with racism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As an unapologetically\nAfrican-American woman who is proud to be who I am, I appreciate and celebrate\nall this country represents and the opportunities that abound. We need to\nget to a place that we stop stereotyping each other, which is unfortunately an\ninherent flaw that works both ways. Instead, accept each other\nunconditionally as the individuals we are by our character as Dr. King ascribed\nto. If we do this, we will get to that place we all yearn for. While\nthere is some degree of hesitancy in the African-American community, I can\u2019t\nbelieve it doesn\u2019t transcend across all of America. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I personally know many in the\nAfrican-American community who want the vaccine, have been vaccinated, have\nsought out information, and informed others about it. I\u2019m sure this is the\ncase across the country in every community regardless of race. There is no\nplace COVID-19 has not touched so the discussions are taking place. I can\nappreciate those whose narrative is that African-Americans are hesitant but I\ndon\u2019t think it\u2019s more than other Americans. We are not\nhesitant. That\u2019s the stereotype component this post addresses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second point is racism and\nhealthcare disparity which has been acknowledged and continues to exist. I\nbelieve this is the true causality of why the number of vaccinations in our\ncommunity is behind the curve of total vaccinations. I read a recent\narticle on the topic of disparity in health care on the New England Journal of\nMedicine. It struck me so profoundly because it spoke to my story as an\nunapologetically black woman in America and was the impetus for me reaching\nout. This is the racism component to this post that we as Americans\ncontinue to struggle with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I don\u2019t pretend to know the answer\nto this critical problem. I will leave that up to the experts to\nsolve. It\u2019s just unimaginable that racism and healthcare disparity is\npresenting as some new epiphany. I do have a suggestion for the\nexperts. Please do the work utilizing a broad scientific study with more\nthan empirical data but solutions to eradicate this scourge before painting the\nnarrative with the broad brush of stereotype that does not speak to the current\nstate of affairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
